Floor Warming F.A.Q.
What's the difference between floor warming and primary room heating?
What type of floor covering can I install my cable under?
I already have my floor covering installed. Can I install the cable in the joist space underneath my floor?
Can I warm the tile floor in my shower?
What is the difference between floor warming and primary heating?
You can use Delta-Therm floor heating cables for floor warming or primary room heating.
A floor warming system is when you install your floor heating cables to keep a floor covering warm and there is another primary heat source such as forced air that warms the room.
A primary room heating system is when you install your floor heating cable as the only heat source in the room. If you are going to use your floor heating system as the primary room heat you will need to provide us with a heat loss calculation.
What type of floor covering can I install my cable under?
You can embed your floor heating cable in mortar under tile, marble, stone, laminate, hardwood, engineered floating hardwood, vinyl, carpet, concrete, and more. For best performance the r-value of the floor covering should be under 2.5. vinyl floors.
I already have my floor covering installed. Can I install the cable in the joist space underneath my floor?
Delta-Therm floor heating cables are made to be embedded in mortar and cannot be installed under the floor. The mortar bed absorbs the heat from the cable and spreads it underneath the floor covering.
We don't make underfloor heating products because:
You will most likely have to drill through the joists which violates residential building code.
The N.E.C. requires a 1" air gap between the heating element and any surfaces. Your cable will not be in direct contact with the floor and air has poor heat transfer properties. Therefore your floor will take a long time to warm up, and the system will use more energy to maintain your floor temperature.
Can I warm the tile floor in my shower?
The N.E.C. prohibits installing electric floor heating cables in showers. Some people do install low voltage floor heating elements under pan in their shower. You will violate your Delta-Therm warranty if you install Delta-Therm cables beneath a shower stall. It is very difficult to install the pan evenly over heating cables and if the pan cracks you may have a serious problem.
